The Indian Leg of the Great Backyard Bird Count, the 10th edition of Bird-O-Thon Records an Impressive 1,017 Species

A pair of bright yellow eyes stared right back at Angeline Mano, a 23-year-old birder, as she zoomed in with her binoculars. Angeline was at Stanley Reservoir in Salem, one of the largest fishing reservoirs in South India, documenting birds for the recently-concluded, annual Global Backyard Bird Count (GBCC). The bulky bird with a finely streaked breast, was a brown fish owl, perched on a branch just 10 metres away.

The India leg of the four-day event, coordinated by Bird Count India, allowed participants to count birds for as little as 15 minutes from a particular location. They upload their sightings online, on eBird (www.ebird.org/india), the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science platform.

INDIAN INNOVATION – GREEN : SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY : IIT Guwahati Develops Technology to Standardise Electric Vehicles in India

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has developed a technology that rates the motors and batteries of electric vehicles and suggests the best drivetrain components for the Indian scenario to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

According to IIT Guwahati, this is a unique method of its kind which standardises the electronic vehicles based on Indian drive-cycles.

T. G. Sitharam, director, IIT Guwahati, said, “The development in the field of next-generation energy-efficient EV technology is one of the most important breakthroughs required for the sustainable development of the country and to reduce the carbon footprint. IIT Guwahati is earnestly working in this direction. This development will augment this process and maximize the outcomes.”

WORLD RECORDS : SOLAR ENERGY : India 5th in Global Position in Solar Power Deployment Surpassing Italy

India achieved 5th global position in solar power deployment by surpassing Italy.

Solar power capacity has increased by more than 11 times in the last five years from 2.6 GW in March,2014 to 30 GW in July, 2019.  Presently, solar tariff in India is very competitive and has achieved grid parity.

India added a record 10 Gigawatt (GW) of solar energy to its cumulative installed capacity in 2021. This has been the highest 12-month capacity addition, recording nearly a 200% year-on-year growth. India has now surpassed 50 GW of cumulative installed solar capacity, as on 28 February 2022.

This is a milestone in India’s journey towards generating 500 GW from renewable energy by 2030, of which 300 GW is expected to come from solar power.

India’s capacity additions rank the country fifth in solar power deployment, contributing nearly 6.5% to the global cumulative capacity of 709.68 GW.

PATENT : First-of-its-kind Patent for Flywheel-based Tech granted to Chaganti Srinivas Bhasker and Chaganti Bala, couple fromTelangana

For the first time in the country, probably in the world, a patent has been issued to flywheel-based power generation, the first-of-its-kind fuel-less power generation technology.

The Kinetics Associated Mass Mechanical Applications (KAMMA) — heat, work and internal energy transfers from one object to another — are applied to KAMMA gear flywheel power generation method. The patent office said the date of filing of the patent (patent application number 201941039749 and patent number 382243) was October 1, 2019, and it was granted on November 22, 2021.

The patent was issued to Chaganti Srinivas Bhasker and Chaganti Bala, a couple who had worked on the subject for the past three decades. “It is hereby certified that a patent has been granted to the patentee for an invention entitled ‘Kamma Gear Flywheel Power Generation and Multiplication and Storage’ as disclosed in the above mentioned application for the term of 20 years from the 1 st day of October 2019 in accordance with the Patents Act 1970,” reads the certificate.

Mr. Bhaskar explained that in the pulse=based power generation, the method being followed is acceleration and deceleration. Once the motor is switched on for one minute and switched off, the thrust force developed by 670KW motor would rotate 18 flywheels (in series), total 400 tonne in weight, each flywheel six metres in diameter, at 1,000 rotations per minute (rpm).

Discovery. New Species of Primate, White Cheeked Macaque Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh

A group of scientists from Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has discovered a new species of primate, White Cheeked Macaque, from Arunachal Pradesh.

After extensive survey, we have multiple evidences that includes two skin samples and a juvenile White Cheeked Macaque that was found in the house of a local villager that confirms our discovery,” ZSI scientist Mukesh Thakur, who led the study said.

He added that ZSI will not only push for its inclusion in Wildlife Protection Act but will take up long term monitoring to demarcate its distribution boundary and population size.”It is very rare in present days when a mammal species is discovered. The discovery of smaller animals like amphibians and insects are quite common,” Thakur said.

The discovery has been published in the international journal “Animal Gene.”
