INTERNATIONAL: INDIAN ORIGIN LEADER IN LONDON: Delhi Man Tarun Ghulati, London Mayoral Hopeful, Wants To Run The British Capital City As A CEO

After Indian Origin PM, the UK may soon get Tarun Ghulati as next London Mayor who wants to ‘improve’ the capital city by way of strengthening the police, affordable housing, ‘uplift’ all Londoners.

Tarun Ghulati, 63, is fighting tooth and nail to become the next Mayor of London as the contest for the coveted post heats up before the May 2, 2024 election date with several key hopefuls from Britain’s leading political parties in the fray. Ghulati, a finance pro and “proud Hindu with Sanatan roots”, has plans to run the British capital city as a “CEO” by “improving” and “uplifting” the lives of Londoners with an enhanced police, affordable housing and abolishing “unpopular” rules brought about by incumbent Sadiq Khan.

Ghulati, a father of two who claims to be a “global citizen” working across geographies from Delhi to Mauritius and Qatar to the UK, entered the chaotic British political scene around 2021. In 2009, he was successful in obtaining the citizenship of that country, which since then has become his home. However, Ghulati has been living in London for the past two decades. He arrived there on a work permit by banking giant HSBC, Ghulati’s former employer.

But it has not been easy for Ghulati, who inevitably as a person of Indian origin and being a person of colour had to face hurdles in the initial years, which he had been able to win over eventually. He is the first Indian to run for this post in the history of the UK.

“I have been the same person every day for the last 40 years. I am disciplined. I get up early and I have the plan for the day ready. I am extremely punctual. I tend not to look over my shoulders and feel the envy or the pain of what others are doing. I have my own journey which I follow. I am known for being trustworthy and straightforward … As far as I am concerned whilst there will be concerns and hindrances down the way, I have a clear plan to make sure that I bring the smiles back and the mojo back for London,”  he told ABPLIVE during his recent visit to India.

Dressed in an impeccable blue suit, Ghulati spoke about how he overcame some of the obstacles, gate-crashed into London’s political theatre and now vying for a place for himself as an independent candidate amid a tightening mayoral race of London.

“Like anybody else, I have faced hurdles and turns-off being initially an Indian and perhaps later on because of my colour but I have not faced racism overtly because I have always been somebody whom people have recognised that I will not be cowered down by any sort of hindrances … I do know people in high places, whether it’s members from the House of Lords or politicians I do meet them. That helps in understanding the local issues and opportunities,” he averred.

‘Want To Be A Mayor For Everybody’

Ghulati began working actively in London’s political scene during the days of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“I felt that to beat the London Mayor Sadiq Khan you need someone who is not only able to bring investments, is a global citizen, but somebody who has the gravitas to take position. The budget for London that the London Mayor handles is roughly about $21 billion Sterling. I would like to run it as a CEO runs a business with a good dashboard with the right sort of people running it,” he underlined.

“I want to be a mayor of London for everybody,” said Ghulati, eluding to some of the controversial policies laid down in the British capital by Khan such as the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which was launched in 2019, that is over and above the £15 congestion fee.

“Imagine if you are a businessman in a cost of living crisis, where people are wondering whether to heat or eat and at the same time there are a lot of middle income people there who need to be uplifted … I sincerely believe that the freedom of movement is as critical as the freedom of speech. So I want to abolish ULEZ on day one,” he added.

Ghulati’s other objective is to push security and safety through increased Police deployment in certain neighbourhoods where crime rates are high and opening of more Police stations.

“Whilst I am a Londoner and I spent nearly two decades there and call it home, I am also a global citizen. I am also proud about my Hindu heritage, Sanatan roots … I am here for everybody,” he said.

Khalistan Vandalism, India-UK FTA

Being an Indian-origin, Ghulati vows to work towards strengthening the bilateral relationship between the UK and India, be it addressing the growing concerns in New Delhi over the resurgence of Khalistan terrorism in London or whether it is pushing for the India-UK trade pact, or Free Trade Agreement (FTA) towards a meaningful conclusion.

“Indian flag being disrespected is not accepted at all. In those sorts of things, the London Mayor Sadiq Khan should have been more proactive, there should have been intelligence. People are not being parachuted there out of nowhere, there was a group of people coming towards the High Commission, so there should have been preventive action taken. In matters like these more action could have been taken not only to prevent but avoid an escalation too,” he said.

Ghulati added that the London Mayor was “sitting on the fence” when the incident happened.

While incidents of vandalism of the Indian High Commission in London by Khalistan supporters has become a regular affair, tension between both countries peaked in March this year when a Khalistani protestor pulled down the Indian Flag flying atop the High Commission and was not even stopped once by the Police present there.

On the issue of having the India-UK FTA, Ghulati said he is already working on getting the pending pact concluded. As a member of the London Chamber of Commerce he has brought a business delegation to India in August to foster business and trade ties.

“When the FTA is signed, and I know we are on the last legs of that particular trade agreement, it would pave the way for me in playing a role there as the London Mayor plays a key role in fostering businesses and we facilitate there entry into London and give them the support so that they can hit the ground running,” said Ghulati.

INDIA IN THE WORLD: ‘Statue of Equality’: Tallest Statue of Ambedkar outside India unveiled in US

The statue has been made by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, who also built the statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat.

The tallest statue of Dr BR Ambedkar, the principal architect of India’s Constitution, outside India was formally inaugurated in a Maryland suburb of the US capital here.

Amidst chants of “Jai Bhim”, more than 500 Indian-Americans from various parts of the United States and some from India and other countries attended the unveiling ceremony of the 19-feet tall “Statue of Equality”.

Heavy rain and drizzle did not deter the enthusiasm and energy of the participants, many of whom drove for as long as 10 hours to attend what they described as a historic event.

The statue has been made by renowned artist and sculptor Ram Sutar, who also built the statue of Sardar Patel, called as Statue of Unity, and installed on an island in Narmada, metres downstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.

“We are calling it the Statue of Equality… this (inequality) is not only the problem in India, everywhere (in) different forms (it exists),” Ram Kumar, president of the Ambedkar International Center (AIC) told PTI after the statue unveiling ceremony.

Born on April 14, 1891, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar – popular among his followers as Babasaheb – was the chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s most crucial Drafting Committee that earned him the moniker Architect of the Indian Constitution.

Spread over 13 acres, the AIC in Accokeek township, some 22 miles south of the White House, would consist of a library, convention center, and Buddha Garden among others.

“This is a great occasion to participate in the unveiling ceremony of statue of Babasaheb. This is the tallest statue of Babasaheb in America. ..After 75 years of independence, the people are realizing the works done by Dr. Ambedkar and that’s the reason why day by day he’s getting the popularity, …people are now understanding him in a proper way.

“Earlier he was treated as a Dalit leader, but now the entire nation is recognizing his contribution of empowering the woman and for the marginalized society as well as the economic weaker sections,” Ravi Kumar Narra, national president of Dalit Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DICCI), told PTI.

Narra, who travelled from India to attend the ceremony, said now all the developed nations have realized and also underdeveloped nations are thinking of implementing Ambedkar’s ideology that a country cannot become rich and great unless each and every citizen gets empowered.

“The greatest economic policy advocated by Dr Ambedkar is now becoming the reality,” he said.

The “Statue of Equality” represents 1.4 billion Indians and 4.5 million Indian Americans, said Deelip Mhaske from New York who leads the Ambedkarite movement in the US.

“Although this is completely done through community contributions, we received congratulatory messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stating ‘Ambedkarite has put the foundation of Unified India in the USA and globally’,” he said.

“This statue will not just inspire millions of Indians residing in the US but all communities including Black, Hispanic and others!” Mhaske said. “This is a historic step towards unifying the Indian-American diaspora and working towards making India a superpower not just in technology but also in social justice,” he said.

Mahindra Rajwade, who drove for more than 10 hours from Kentucky to attend the statue unveiling ceremony, said this is a proud moment for all followers of Dr Ambedkar. “This is for the first time in the world that we are having such a tall statue of Babasaheb outside India”.

The unveiling ceremony was followed by cultural performances by Indian-Americans from various parts of the country.

Elisha B. Pulivarti, president and CEO for US India SME Council, presented the US President’s Lifetime Achievement Award to DICCI president Narra in recognition of his community service.

Post-Independence, Ambedkar was also the Minister of Law and Justice in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s first Cabinet. Ambedkar played a key role in social movements that fought for the rights of Dalits and untouchables.

Ambedkar died on December 6, 1956, months after he embraced Buddhism on October 14 that year, the date coinciding with the unveiling of the statue in Maryland. October 14 is celebrated as Dhamma Chakra Parivartan Din by Ambedkarites.

INTERNATIONAL & NATIONAL: HISTORY / HERITAGE: UK museum to sign pact for return of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s ‘Tiger Claws’ to India

The MoU, expected to be signed on Tuesday, coincides with Maharashtra’s 350th anniversary celebrations of the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

The Victoria and Albert ( V and A) Museum is all set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government next week, which will see 17th century ‘Tiger Claws’ weapon believed to have belonged to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj make a journey back to India for an exhibition.

During a protracted military engagement in 1659, the legendary Maratha leader held metal claws, or wagh nakh, concealed in his hand and is said to have disembowelled his opponent Afzal Khan – the commander of the opposing Bijapur army.

It is believed, though unverified, that the set of claws then came into the possession of James Grant Duff, an officer of the East India Company who was appointed Resident or political agent of the Satara state in 1818 and gifted to the V and A by a descendant.

“The V and A looks forward to welcoming senior leadership from the Maharashtra government, to sign a memorandum of understanding,” a V and A spokesperson said.

“The story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s triumph over Afzal Khan is legendary, so we are delighted that the ‘Tiger Claws’ will return to India as part of the 350th anniversary events where they can be enjoyed as part of the celebrations. We hope that their display might also enable new research into their history and look forward to working in partnership with colleagues in the months ahead as we develop plans for their display,” the spokesperson said.

The MoU, expected to be signed on Tuesday, coincides with Maharashtra’s 350th anniversary celebrations of the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is then expected to be dispatched to India later this year for an agreed period.

According to the V and A, the weapon is accompanied by a fitted case made after Grant Duff returned to Scotland. The inscription on the case reads: “The ‘Wagnuck’ of Sivajee With Which He Killed the Moghul General. This Relic was given to Mr. James Grant-Duff of Eden When he was Resident at Satara By the Prime Minister of the Peshwa of the Marathas”.

According to historical accounts, Shivaji and Afzal Khan had arranged a truce after political upheavals in order to meet in a tented enclosure, virtually alone.

The V and A description of the history of the ‘Tiger Claws’ explains: “Both came armed: Shivaji wore mail under his clothes and metal skull protection under his turban. He also held a metal ‘Tiger Claws’ weapon concealed in his hand. The two men fought, and Shivaji disembowelled his opponent.

“The last Peshwa (Prime Minister) of the Marathas, Baji Rao II, surrendered to the British in June 1818 after defeat in the Third Anglo-Maratha War and was banished to Bithoor near Kanpur. It is possible he also surrendered this weapon to Grant Duff. It has not been possible to verify whether these tiger claws are the ones used by Shivaji nearly 160 years earlier.”

INTERNATIONAL: 22 countries DEFENCE CONCLAVE: India to Host 2-day Conclave of Indo-Pacific Army Chiefs, September 26-27

Fifteen Army chiefs and delegations from 22 countries will attend the event to be held in Delhi on September 26 and 27. The US Army is co-hosting the conference.

The Indian Army will host a two-day conference of Army chiefs of the Indo-Pacific nations next week with an aim to evolve a common strategy to ensure peace, prosperity and stability against the backdrop of growing global concerns over China’s increasing military muscle-flexing in the region.

Fifteen Army chiefs and delegations from 22 countries will attend the event to be held in Delhi on September 26 and 27, officials said. The US Army is co-hosting the conference.

The Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs’ Conclave (IPACC) will deliberate on the role of military diplomacy in mitigating various crises, ways to enhance collaboration among the armed forces of the region and boosting interoperability. An exhibition of India’s indigenously developed weapons, military systems and platforms is also being organised on the sidelines of the event.

Alongside the 13th edition of the IPACC, the Indian Army is also hosting the 47th Indo-Pacific Armies Management Seminar (IPAMS) and the Senior Enlisted Leaders Forum (SELF).

Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar said the event will provide a unique opportunity to build common perspectives towards a shared vision and that it will help strengthen friendships through the formidable and indelible “soldierly bond.”

The IPACC, instituted as a biennial event in 1999, is attended by Army chiefs of countries of the Indo-Pacific region, to discuss issues of mutual interest.

“The current edition of this conclave is very special, as it will witness participation of full spectrum of military ranks, from Army chiefs to non-commissioned Officers from 22 nationalities, and their spouses,” Lt Gen Kumar told reporters.

“Fifteen Army chiefs and delegations from 22 countries will attend this event in Delhi. I take this opportunity to thank the US Army, especially US Army Pacific, who are our co-hosts,” he said.

The Indo-Pacific Armies Management Seminar (IPAMS), held annually, is one of the largest conferences for the land forces in the region which is organised annually by US Army Pacific, along with a co-host country.

In his remarks, the Vice Chief of Army Staff also underlined the importance of land forces to ensure the vision of a free, open, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific that he asserted must be based on a rules-based international order.

“The Indian Army’s involvement in the Indo-Pacific mirrors this thought. As we delve into the region’s intricacies and our role within its development, the paramount importance of peace, security, and stability cannot be overlooked,” he said.

“Since Independence, the Indian armed Forces, particularly the Indian Army, have made significant contributions in promoting peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Lt Gen Kumar said the Indian Army’s commitment is not limited to security efforts alone but extends to humanitarian endeavours and relief efforts during natural disasters also.

The theme of the conclave is ‘Together for Peace: Sustaining Peace and Stability in the Indo-Pacific Region’.

“In the IPACC roundtable, the chiefs of Indo-Pacific Armies will address the issues of the role of military diplomacy in mitigating crises, enhancing military collaboration and interoperability through training and the need for self-reliance by modern armies,” Lt Gen Kumar said.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Manoj Pande will have bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event.

“This gathering serves as a testament to the pivotal role this region holds in the global landscape, both economically and strategically,” the Vice Chief of Army Staff said.

“As we deliberate on the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, we are reminded that the Indo-Pacific is not just a geographical expanse, but a stage where nations unite to shape the narrative of our shared future,” he said.

GLOBAL & NATIONAL: INFORMATION TECHNOLGY: Infosys Only Indian Firm in TIME Magazine’s World’s Best 100 Companies list

The list, curated by TIME and Statista, is dominated by global Big Tech companies like Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet and Meta Platforms which were the top four companies on the list.

IT major Infosys is the only Indian company featured in TIME Magazine’s top 100 ‘World’s Best Companies 2023’ list, dominated by Big Tech.

The Bengaluru-based professional services firm has been ranked 64th spot in the top 100 list.

“Infosys has been featured in TIME World’s Best Companies 2023 list. We are among the top 3 global professional services firms and the only brand from India in the Top 100 global rankings,” the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The list, curated by TIME and Statista, is dominated by global Big Tech companies like Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Meta Platforms which were the top four companies on the list.

Other top companies in the coveted list are Accenture, Pfizer, American Express, BMW Group, Dell Technologies, Louis Vuitton, Delta Air Lines, Starbucks, Volkswagen Group, General Motors, Ford and others.

The list is based on a formula of revenue growth, employee-satisfaction surveys, and rigorous environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG, or sustainability) data. Big Tech had a tough year, laying off tens of thousands of workers since January.

But the world’s biggest tech companies are also the ones doing best for investors, employees, and the planet.

“Microsoft, for example, the top company in the global rankings, made $72 billion in its most recent fiscal year, a 63 per cent increase from 2020, while also reducing overall emissions by 0.5 per cent,” said TIME.

Accenture, based in Dublin, had the highest ESG ranking of any company on the list.

“The rankings show just who dominates the world economic order, with fast-moving tech and business-services companies unseating the manufacturers and consumer-goods companies that once drove the global economy,” the magazine said.
